I had a newpaper reporter in my class to talk about... of all things...
the AS-1 seismograph! GREAT teachable moment!

We had the same opportunity here as well. I was teaching an Earth
Science class when the waves rolled in, providing another great learning
moment, courtesy of the AS-1.

Subject: [irised] Recent (Very!) Alaskan Quake

I had the good fortune to be looking at my screen when waves from a
quake in Alaska started rolling in. I have an Advisory class at that
time, so I was able to take advantage of the open structure of this
"class" to seize the moment and teach them some seismology.

I found another site that posts current seismic data from a variety of
recording stations to show them that the strongest waves were in Alaska,
so that was likely where the quake occurred, and then used the IRIS site
to show them the report of this quake, it's magnitude, etc.

One student even asked prior to that if I could tell what the magnitude
was from my instrument. We just didn't have time in this 20 minute
period to try it ourselves. Now if I can only get enough students for a
section of geology to run next fall.......

Hi J. Bob,

I have seen the screen look like this when the sample rate printed in

the bottom left of the screen had changed for some reason. It should

be just a bit higher than 6 samples per second. Stopping and
starting AmaSeis has, in my experience, corrected the problem.

Let us know what happens.

Cheers,
John

Hi All,
I am having problems with my recording. The recording never goes all

the way to the right edge of the screen. It stops at 58 minutes and
goes on to the next line. Does anyone know how to fix this?
